Did you know that there are more bacterial cells in your body than human cells? That means we are actually more bacteria than human! And most of this bacteria live in the human gut.
Also called the gastrointestinal tract or GI tract, the gut is an essential part of our health.
Not only is it responsible for breaking down the food you eat, absorbing nutrition, and maintaining your immune system – there’s a whole lot going on in your gut that you might not know about.
Here are 3 surprising facts about your gut:
Ever notice how when you feel nervous, you get butterflies in your stomach?
Or when you’re sad, you tend to lose (or maybe increase) your appetite?
That’s because your gut is home to over 100 million neurons (second only to your brain) – and talks directly with your real brain.
This connection is called the gut-brain axis, and new research suggests that your gut can affect your mood and cognition, and vice versa (1, 2).
So if you’re watching a sappy rom-com and suddenly crave for some ice cream, that might be your gut and brain telling you to grab a comfort snack.
Ever had a busy day, skipped lunch, and in the afternoon, you get so cranky that you feel like flinging something at your co-worker?
There is a scientific explanation for being “hangry,” or angry while you are hungry, according to research: low serotonin levels.
Serotonin is a neurotransmitter, which are chemicals that carry messages between nerve cells in the brain and throughout your body. These chemical messages tell your body how to work.
Serotonin plays several roles, including influencing mood, memory, sleep, appetite and digestion. And 90% of it is produced in the gut! That means no food = less serotonin = more hangry (3).
Who knew we could only be a snack away from a complete meltdown?
It is believed that the ancient Greek philosopher and physician Hippocrates said that “All disease begins in the gut”. He may be long gone, but more recent studies back him up.
In fact, breakthrough studies from Harvard, John Hopkins and Duke University (1, 2, 4) have found that gut health is directly related to:
These studies have even shown that your gut and brain are directly connected, and things like depression and anxiety have been linked to a malfunctioning gut.
Washington University conducted an experiment to test how diet affects gut bacteria (5).
In this experiment, they took gut bacteria on one pair of human twins, where one of them was lean and the other was obese.
The bacteria was placed into mice that lived in sterile environments and had no bacteria of their own.
After 15 days living on a healthy diet, the mouse that received bacteria from the lean twin stayed lean, while the mouse that received bacteria from the obese twin gained weight and fat, and developed metabolic problems.
In another experiment, they put together lean mice and obese mice in the same enclosure to expose them to each other’s bacteria, and fed them two different diets.
In the enclosure high in fruits and vegetables, gut microbes in the lean mouse flourished and influenced the microbes in the obese mouse, preventing it from gaining weight and fat.
However, when the researchers repeated the experiment but fed the mice an unhealthy diet high in saturated fat and low in fruits and vegetables, bacteria from the lean mouse couldn’t colonize the obese mouse, causing it to gain weight and fat.
This experiment proves that diet plays a vital role in cultivating your gut bacteria and influencing your health.
That the food you eat – especially highly processed foods rich in saturated fats, sugars, cholesterol, GMOs, and additives – is directly related to weight gain and digestive problems.
However, research shows it can also be the cause of brain fog, mood swings, and so many more of the health issues and chronic diseases we experience today.
In fact, the CDC reports that 6 in 10 adults suffer from chronic disease (6);
Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the US
Obesity is the # 2 cause of preventable death in the US
Diabetes will affect 1 out of 2 children born in 2000
Besides providing important phytonutrients and antioxidants, fruits and vegetables are also a good source of prebiotics – a kind of fiber is often found in cruciferous vegetables like cauliflower, broccoli, cabbage, and kale; and in fruits like bananas, berries, tomatoes, and apples (7).
Prebiotic fiber feeds the good bacteria in your gut – the ones responsible for ensuring your gut functions properly:
So if a healthy diet is the key to a healthy gut and a healthier lifestyle, then why aren’t more people eating better?
A 2020 study found that 9 in 10 Americans do not eat enough fruits and vegetables. In fact, there has been a steady 10% decline in the consumption of fruits and vegetables since 2004, indicating that this trend is worsening every year (8).
The study found that consumers opted to skip fresh produce because of:
